Get Tidy Even When You’re Busy

Juggling many different roles: looking after kids, wanting to advance in your career, and keeping up with all the changes around you may drive housekeeping and household chores to the back burner. There are only twenty-four hours in a day and even if we get a couple of hours to ourselves, who would prefer to organize and tackle clutter rather than take a breather and zone out for a while?

This is a dilemma that most people encounter. The difference between those with tidy and organized homes and those swamped with boxes from when they moved in three years ago, is that the former group thinks that it is alright to cheat. Cheating here is taking shortcuts and cutting corners. Working smarter rather than harder.

This is the principle that you have to keep in mind in your quest to finally gain control. Here are a few concrete tips on how to put the principle into practice:

-         Washing dishes take a lot of time and effort. On evenings when you are thoroughly beat, don’t think that disposables are beneath you. You can occasionally revert to them in cases where all you can think of after dinner is calling it a night and going to bed. As long as you only do this occasionally, you won’t be doing the environment any harm.

-         If your carpet is showing its age and there are some faded and stained spots, you can save on a whole job by going the smart route. You can place area rugs strategically and the problem spots are now nobody’s business. You can save a lot by postponing the install of new tile flooring or wood flooring if you can get a few more years by doing this.

-         The couch is looking old and tired – probably because of your kids plopping down on them with shoes on. You can’t replace or reupholster only to have them ruined again. You can wait until the kids are grown up but what do you do in the meantime? Sofa covers are a good alternative. They will hide all the blemishes and unsightly stains and little tears. When they get dirty, all you need to do is dump them in the washing machine and they’ll look good as new. They are relatively inexpensive too so you can get a few designs to rotate and stave off boredom.

-         Walls that show their age are easily and cheaply remedied by wallpapers. You can even go a little more creative and make your own or modify and spruce up plain ones. You can break the monotony by hanging potted plants and homemade wall hangings. You can put your kids’ art projects to good use by having them framed and mounted.

You don’t have to spend a lot of time nor money to have your home looking like new. Breathe life into a tired room by letting your inner artist come loose. Be as creative as you dare to be guided only by magazines, articles, and your own personal sense of taste.
